The first stage of a strong collaborative project between Dubbo Regional, Gilgandra and Narromine Council’s supported by NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet (PDC) has been launched detailing proposed capital works projects and the skills required within the region to deliver them efficiently.
The Industry, Skills and Opportunities paper identified that the three LGAs had low unemployment rates with a number of large construction projects planned
in the near future. The paper, delivered by Western Research Institute, is the first step in determining opportunities for local industry and for businesses
to expand.
Narromine Shire Council’s General Manager, Jane Redden said “The three Councils have taken a proactive approach to developing the region, across the LGAs,
for the benefit of all the localities”
“The paper identified some positive ways forward for regions and regional NSW in general to best take advantage of the boom in industry with a focus on
population growth, workforce training and business development”
“Opportunities outlined in the paper include a strong demand for labour relating construction, energy, road and rail. With shortages identified in metal
fabrication, plant operation, electrician, diesel mechanic and engineering.” she said.
Council has committed to the outcomes of this paper including development of workforce and businesses through facilitated training and development. The
focus of attracting skilled workers will be done through partnerships and increased marketing activities in identified areas with Council continuing
to work closely with stakeholders to secure the best skills outcomes for the three LGAs.
