Frequently asked questions and answers
Trying to make decisions about your own burial, or that of a loved one, can be emotional, quite confronting and confusing. To help you better understand, here are some answers to frequently asked questions to assist through this difficult time.
How do I purchase or reserve a burial site or niche?
Sometimes it’s best to visit the cemetery you would like to purchase or reserve your plot in and select location – either a burial site or niche wall. Because some locations may already be sold or reserved, it’s ideal if you identify a few alternate options. Once you have made some decisions, contact Council’s Cemetery Team on 02 6889 9999 who will be able to confirm:
- Availability
- Location
- Any conditions and restrictions that may be relevant to the plot you have chosen.
Once the site has been confirmed you will need to do one of the following:
- To purchase a Perpetual Interment Right submit a completed application form to Council along with photo identification attached or call to arrange an appointment.
- To reserve an Interment Right submit a completed application form to Council along with photo identification or call to arrange an appointment.
Once payment is made Council will issue an Interment Right Certificate.
What is an Interment Right?
An interment right is a contract between a cemetery operator (Council) and a right holder/s (Grantee/s) permitting the Grantee/s to be buried in a particular location in a cemetery.
What if I change my mind, can I transfer my Perpetual Interment Right to another person or relinquish to Council?
Yes, you are able to transfer your perpetual interment right to another person or relinquish to Council by completing and submitting to Council a Transfer Interment Right by Holder application form.
Are there any other options to transfer a Perpetual Interment Right?
Yes, there are 2 other options for transferring a perpetual interment right.
- The holder of an interment right may bequeath the right as part of their personal estate. The person who benefits from the bequest does not become the holder of the right until a Transfer Interment Right as a Bequest application is submitted to Council for processing.
- Rules of intestacy apply when interment rights are not bequeathed. A person to whom an interment right devolves as a result of intestacy does not become the holder of the right until a Transfer Perpetual Interment Right as Result of Intestacy application has been completed and submitted to Council for processing.

How do I organise a burial?
Start by engaging the services of a Funeral Director who will make the necessary arrangements with Council. Your Funeral Director must complete and lodge a Burial Application form prior to the funeral/burial taking place. Once processed Council will issue the Funeral Director with an Order for Interment.
What is an Order for Interment?
An order for interment is issued only at the time of death. This order is required prior to any interment (burial) in Council’s cemeteries. It indicates that Council authorises a funeral director to bury a deceased person or inter ashes in a particular location in its cemetery. The funeral director must complete and lodge an application prior to the funeral/burial.
