The release of approximately 3,400 Murray Cod and 4,500 Golden Perch fingerlings will take place along various locations of the Macquarie River on Monday 11 January 2021.
The fingerling release is part of a ‘Dollar for Dollar Native Fish Stocking Program’ between Narromine Shire Council, Macquarie Cotton Growers Association and NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI).
Narromine Shire Council’s Mayor, Clr Craig Davies said ‘Council has participated in the fish release program for 22 years with about 200,000 fingerlings released over this period’.
It estimated that it takes around three to four years for the fingerlings to reach maturity and Council together with Macquarie Cotton Growers Association are working towards maintaining a balanced river ecosystem in the Narromine Shire by regularly stocking the Macquarie River with native fish species, he said.
The Dollar for Dollar Native Fish Stocking Program is recognised for its importance to the Narromine region in terms of providing quality recreational fishing, conservation outcomes, employment and subsequent economic benefits, he added.
There is an opportunity for Narromine Shire residents to participate in the fish release on Monday 11 January 2020 at 10.30 am Narromine Boat Ramp (Rotary Park), further releases will occur downstream at Turkey Farm Reserve and Trangie Ski Hole.
