Commemorative plaque installed for Kurrajongs in Narromine

A commemorative plaque, for the Kurrajong Trees that were removed from Dandaloo Street in Narromine, has been installed out the front of the Narromine Shire Council Chambers.

The plaque commemorates an avenue of Kurrajong Trees that were planted by Narromine Municipal Council from 1917, and many decades following, as a memorial to the servicemen who lost their lives in World War 1.

Narromine Shire Council’s General Manager, Jane Redden said “The Kurrajong trees on the northern side of the railway were removed in 1934-35 by the Department of Main Roads as part of major road improvements”

“In 2018, the Kurrajong Trees on the southern side of the railway line were removed and replaced with the Manchurian Pear Trees, a much more suitable street tree, as part of the Main Street Enhancement Program”

“The Kurrajong trees were causing major damage to the road, surrounding drainage systems and footpaths and unfortunately needed to be removed” she said.

Narromine’s Cenotaph, constructed in 1924, is Narromine’s War Memorial honouring the servicemen who died in World War 1.
